Open day at test site Vlassenbroek

wave impact generator in action

On 2 April 2026, an open day was organised at the BONSAI test site Vlassenbroek (BE). Colleagues from inside and outside the project were invited to join the teams of Flanders Hydraulics, De Vlaamse Waterweg (The Flemish Waterway) and INBO to see the wave impact tests at this location.

The wave impact tests at Vlassenbroek will enhance our knowledge of the strength and durability of different types of lime-treated clay and their grass cover, making them an important part of the erosion and vegetation topics within BONSAI.

It was a very interesting day where the tests and the BONSAI project were explained on site, and where visitors could see the wave impact generator live in action.

It was also fascinating to see the damage on the different test sections up close.

Grass cover completely swept away during the wave impact tests.

Burrowing animals are the cause of damage to the levee during the wave impact tests.

And here also animals are the main factor in damaging the cover layer that results in damages to the levee during the wave impact tests.
